There are loads of NAS manufacturers, offering many additional services from these sophisticated multi-functional network devices, but listed here are some of the more common additional featers they may provide.

Some NAS's act as iSCSI target servers, ideal for cost-efficient IP-SAN set-up.  Different iSCSI Target LUNs (Logical Unit Number) can be defined as storage expansion or back up destination of the existing application servers, such as database or mail servers.  "Virtual Space Allocation" (Thin Provisioning) features are sometimes provided allowing you to flexibly allocate the capacity of iSCSI LUN (Logical Unit Number). When the physical storage capacity of the volume is going to be full, you can easily expand the storage capacity by adjusting / removing the currently unused volume space.

Wireless Home Networking Integration.  You can sometimes connect a NAS to the home wireless network through a USB Wi-Fi dongle for convenient access and compatible with fast 802.11n and 802.11g dongles for Wi-Fi connection.  Remote Access Anytime, Anywhere

Most NAS's provide a Web File Manager for you to access and manage the server data any time, anywhere by a web browser. A Web File Manager can support intelligent data searches, batch file uploads and downloads, file extraction, mounting ISO files,file-level permission settings, and more.

Many NAS's provide a service which allows you to connect to your NAS remotely from anywhere. Various NAS services can be easily published and accessed on the Internet. You can download and upload files, back up and share your photos and music instantly, and even back up important files from the NAS to other cloud storage providers.
