A NAS is a small computer with it's own CPU, operating system and memory, serving storage to your network.  As such it can provide many common server functions.

Print Server

 

Many NAS servers support print server functionality.  You can connect as many USB printers to a NAS as there are free USB ports and share the printers with family members for network (LAN or even Internet) printing.

FTP Server

 

Many NAS servers can be configured as FTP servers allowing you to share large files conveniently with others.  Especially usefull for small businesses.

Web Server

 

Some NAS's provide Virtual Host Supported Web Servers.  You can host multiple websites with the web server and virtual host features. Some NAS's support PHP, MySQL, HTTPS connection, and SSL authentication and might be the ideal solution for you to create your own websites, e-shops, blogs, content management system (CMS), wiki, and so on.

 

MySQL Server The NAS can be flexibly applied in various deployments such as a database server of another web server in remote site or as an additional backup database server.
